And we are off again.
A midweek getaway, this time at the seaside.
The Belgian North Sea coast is perfect for walks and bike rides.
And eating the freshest fish.
Which for us means cooking ourselves.
That is why we prefer to rent apartments or private homes wherever we go.
Last two time we stayed in Ostend and Nieuwpoort.
This time we decide to stay in Middelkerke, at the Aparthotel Acropolis.
This hotel opened in June 2018.
It doesn’t only have hotel rooms, but individual studio like apartments for 2, 4 and 6 persons with a private kitchen and living room.
We made a video about Aparthotel Acropolis.
You can watch it here:
There is a large parking lot in front of the hotel entrance which makes it very easy to park your car.
You don’t need to make a reservation for a parking spot.
Parking here is free.
We walk up the steps of the hotel.
The reception area is on the right.
On the left is the entrance to the casino next door.
A very cheerful staff member walks us through all the check in details and gives us plenty of helpful information about the hotel.
The reception is open until 6pm on weekdays. During busier holiday months and weekends it remains open until 10pm.
If you check in after the reception closes, you can retrieve your room keys from a small locker a bit further down the hall. The hotel will send you all the necessary information and access codes in advance in that case.
We are staying in a 1-bedroom apartment.
Behind the front door is a hallway with a storage room, guest toilet and a large built in wardrobe clothes hangers for jackets and shelves for other stuff.
A glass door leads to the kitchen and living room area.
As soon as we step inside, we are impressed by how spacious and bright it is. The living room is tastefully decorated with white, grey and green colors. The furniture looks very new. Our living room has a balcony with 2 chairs on it and a view on the parking lot.
In one of the living room cupboards is a safe.
The bed is large and looks very comfy.
Both sides have a bedside shelf, nightstand lamps and an extra socket for a phone charger.
In the bedroom is another built in wardrobe with plenty of space and clothes hangers.
The bathroom has a spacious walk in shower, a double sink vanity and another toilet.
There is toilet paper, toiletries such as shower gel, shampoo, body lotion and a soap bar. In the drawer underneath the sink is a hairdryer.
Also provided: 2 large and 2 small towels.
The kitchen is well equipped.
It has a microwave and oven, dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment, toaster and AEG induction cooktop.
Underneath the sink is a cupboard with a garbage can. A kitchen towel, washcloth, sponge and 2 dishwasher tablets are also present.
There is a small coffee and tea corner with a water boiler and tea bags, instant coffee sticks, creamer sticks, sugar, lemon juice cups and a couple of paper cups.
In the cupboards and drawers is basic kitchen equipment: plates, water glasses, wine glasses, cups, cutlery, pots and pans, bowls, strainer, juicer, stick mixer, baking dish, chopping board, oven mits.
The apartments are not cleaned daily.
If you stay for 6 nights or more your apartment will get a good clean every 3 nights. Let the reception know what time is best for you.
If you need fresh towels or other toiletries and extra refills, you can simply ask for it at the reception.
Right behind the reception is a large lounge area where guests can relax.
A couple of games are provided: darts, ping pong table and soccer table. In the back is a separate room for small children to play.
Also in the lounge is free fresh coffee and tea that you can get to 24/7.
Two large fridges are filled with chilled water, soft drinks, beer, white wine, champagne and cava. Red wine, glasses and small snacks such as candy, biscuits and crisps are also available.
These drinks and snacks are not free.
When you check in, you will receive an honesty bar list with prices. Write down what you take and settle your bar tap when you check out. Prices are very reasonable: €2 for soft drinks, €2 to €3,50 for a beer, €4,50 for a 25 cl bottle of wine, snacks cost between €1 and €2.
Also in the lounge: 2 microwave ovens. These are mainly used by hotel guests who don’t have a kitchen.
Aparthotel Acropolis has a restaurant called Oreo that serves lunch and dinner.
Due to covid restrictions the restaurant was closed.
So was the hotel’s breakfast room.
Washers and dryers are available for guests.
This service is free.
The reception provides free washing liquid upon request.
Internet connection is complementary and very fast in the apartment and throughout the hotel.
Aparthotel Acropolis doesn’t have a sea view, however the Middelkerke beach is an easy 10 minute walk from the hotel.
Shops and supermarkets
You can find several supermarkets and shops on the same strip in Ostend, about a 10 minute drive from the hotel.
There are a few smaller supermarkets in Middelkerke in walking distance.
The closest airport is Ostend-Bruges, about 4 kilometres from Aparthotel Acropolis.
Would we go back to Aparthotel Acropolis?
We stayed at Aparthotel Acropolis for 4 nights from Monday until Friday in between school holidays and paid €150 per night. Definitely good value for money.
We were looking for a comfortable place to stay at the Belgian coast and we found it here at Aparthotel Acropolis.
Would we recommend Aparthotel Acropolis?
Aparthotel Acropolis offers stylish rooms and apartments for a relaxing stay at the seaside.
This hotel is suitable for families with children.
- stylish and spacious apartment
- comfortable furniture
- large well equipped kitchen
- very friendly and helpful staff
- free coffee and tea facilities
- the light in our bathroom was weak which made it a little dark since there are no windows
- bikes can be stored in the basement, however there is no bicycle parking rack or anything to securely attach them to
- if you are a light sleeper a room overlooking the parking lot and road might be a little noisy, ask for a room on the back of the hotel if you book

We paid for our stay in Aparthotel Acropolis and didn’t get or ask anything in return for this review.
